New Contracts and Growing Exports

Finnøy has signed a number of new contracts with leading Norwegian shipping companies, further strengthening its position as a trusted supplier of propulsion solutions for the modern fishing fleet. The new deliveries include both traditional and hybrid systems.

The contracts cover both new builds and retrofits, ranging from longliners to wellboats and modern trawlers. At the same time, there is growing activity in the international market. Among the new agreements is a contract with Koralhav AS from Brattvåg for the delivery of a new gearbox and remote control system for the longliner KORALHAV. The work will be carried out at Båtbygg in Raudeberg, Norway.

“The shipping company wanted to reduce fuel consumption and achieve more flexible operations, so we recommended our 2-SPEED solution,” says Sales Manager Arne Kristian Nogva at Finnøy. “They’ll get both high and low gear options, as well as variable RPM on the new main engine. The solution is especially well-suited for vessels with varying operational patterns.”

Tailor-Made for the Fishing Fleet

Finnøy’s 2-SPEED gearbox is developed for vessels operating in multiple modes – such as longliners that alternate between low-speed operations and demanding transits. During line setting and hauling, as well as during economic cruising in calm weather, the low gear is used. When the vessel is loaded or operating in rough conditions, the high gear is engaged, optimizing the propeller speed to the power demand. The result is lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions, and more efficient operations.

The combined longliner and gillnetter Vonar, owned by Finnøy Fiskeriselskap AS, will also be retrofitted with a similar solution. This conversion is scheduled for summer 2025 at Vegsund Slip AS.

Long-Term Partnerships and Forward-Thinking Choices

The wellboat company Rostein AS has also chosen Finnøy propulsion systems for its newest vessel, currently under construction at Larsnes Mek. Verksted AS. This will be the 21st vessel in the company’s fleet – all equipped with propulsion systems delivered by Finnøy.

Havbryn AS in Ålesund has also opted for a Finnøy solution for its new 80-meter trawler Havbryn, currently being built at VARD. Here, a hybrid G90FP gearbox system with both PTO and PTI functions will be delivered, offering great operational flexibility and a lower environmental footprint.

Among the most innovative vessels is Ecofive, a newbuild for Bluewild. The vessel is currently docked in Ålesund for final outfitting before its first major fishing trip. Ecofive is equipped with two complete propulsion systems from Finnøy, enabling it to run both main engines for maximum pulling power during trawling – or one engine powering both propellers via PTI. The system delivers both high performance and energy-efficient operation.

Increasing International Activity

In parallel with success in the Norwegian market, demand is growing internationally. We are currently working on projects in India, Canada, and England, where contracts are expected to be signed in the near future. In addition, Finnøy is involved in a project delivering a propulsion solution to a ROPAX ferry in Italy – a segment with great potential for further growth in green technology.

“We’re seeing a clear shift in the market toward more flexible and environmentally friendly solutions. This applies to fisheries, wellboats, and passenger vessels alike. For us, it’s about delivering systems that are technically solid and tailored to the needs of the shipowners – whether they operate along the Norwegian coast or in international waters,” says Nogva.
